A value would be difficult for a Hickernell trumpet. Condition would be a major factor since worn valves or silver plating would cost more to repair than the horn is worth. Most Hickernell trumpets were built by York which, for the most part, don't attract high prices. The other factor is that very few collectors will even have heard of him. I have only seen one come up for sale that I can ever remember and don't know what it sold for. My guess would be around $500 IF it's in really nice shape and you take some good photos.

Yes, the serial number is 24 on the middle valve. A very interesting example as most have numbers in the 3000 range which were made by York.
If you go to BrassHistory.net and look at what I have put together on Hickernell and Vega, you will see that yours looks very much like #12698 which I suspect has at least valves made by Vega of Boston and would date to the right period in 1921-22 when the Hickernell trumpets were being developed. That's not a guarantee though as the more research I do, the more companies I have found with the same style of double banding on the valve casings.
My guess is that you have a very early example from around 1921 and that at least at first, Hickernell was numbering them sequentially.

From the photos you posted, yours looks pretty straight but may have had a lot of use as indicated by the worn plating above the serial number.

Hickernell's "Solo Trumpet" patent was submitted in 1922 and granted in 1924, so that's not what the 1916/1917 (overstamped) patent is for.

I was doing some more research on the source of the early Hickernell trumpets and followed the early news report that they were going to be made by Nuss Mfg in Harrisburg, PA. I found Nuss trumpet #5019 which is a dead ringer to the Hickernell and has the same valve casings and the same font for the 1910 patent reference. Nuss is also only 5 hours from Warren, Ohio and Ross Hickernell was visiting the city in August of 1922 doing demonstrations of the new trumpet.

Nuss could have gotten valves from Blessing or perhaps they were just using the patented valve guide and had to add the patent date. The valve casing design with a concave ring over a convex ring can be seen on many different manufacturers' horns from this period including King, Blessing, Boston, Vega, Heald and many more. Either one maker was doing all the valves or they were copying each other's styling.

My guess is that Hickernell trumpet #24 and #12698 were made by Nuss and all the examples in the 3000 range were made by York (obvious since they are marked with their name).
