Hi Everyone,

I've acquired a trombone that I can't find any information on, so I'm hoping someone might know something about it. It's a silver-toned trombone by Stone & Company, Salt Lake City Utah. The model is "Master." The markings on the outer slide are:
    L   P
P 2 9 6 8 4
which match up to the serial number on the cork barrel, 29684.

The stockings are silver-toned but the rest of the length of the inner slides is brass-toned. The connection of the slide to the rest of the trombone is just a conical compression fitting, there is no screw-on ferrule. And it's very lightweight, compared to my other trombones.

I can't find any information about a manufacturer named Stone and Company--does anyone have any information on the company or the trombone?

The 'P' prefix of the serial number often indicates a Conn Pan-American stencil, which would explain why there is nothing to find about Stone & Co.

Looks like a cheapie from 1923, if I'm reading the serial number website correctly. And I suppose that would explain the light weight as well.

Actually, though the Pan American line was designed to be student models, the concept of a student model back then was a bit different.  The difference was more in the lack of decoration and bells and whistles, compared to the mainline.  The over quality of the basic instrument was not that much different.

Thanks, for the info, Kenton. Even without all the fancy bells and whistles, it's still a better trombone than I am a trombonist, so it suits me just fine! Wink

I fixed up a Ludwig St. Louis from around the same time with similar markings.  Silver plated, exact stencil of a Conn 2H and played nicely.  Some of these stencils can be really damn good.  Not a player, so sold it on and I see the owner occassionally, says it's a nice period jazz instrument.
