I joined a couple days ago, but forgot to introduce myself here. My name is Michael and I'm based in Fremont, Ohio. I'm a horn collector and I'm fascinated by the history that some horns can have.
  
I play tenor/bass trombone, euphonium, tuba, and mellophone.
Collection doesn't fit down here...

Yeah, about collections!  They do start to take up space, don't they!

I'm a french horn player, and have had an Addison and Lucas Vocal(?) horn in my closet for a number of years.

G'day! I'm Lee, a trombonist of limited experience (a retirement activity) living in Tasmania. I've just succumbed to the itch to try a valved brass instrument and bought a well-used (but once badly damaged) F. Besson breveté cornet (no. 108952). At some time it's bell was replaced ("NEW BELL BY T. REYNOLDS 43 CHAPEL ST SALFORD MANCHESTER"). I'm curious about it's origin. From its number I'm thinking it might date from around 1920.

I'd be grateful to have any help in discovering its background.

Regarding the picture, you can either use a location outside of this forum, and use a link to it, (the third icon above is for adding a link to an image) or you can send it to me at Kenton@horn-u-copia.net and I can include it.

Most makers didn't use their serial numbers as a way to establish a chronology.  And, most lists that purport to do so are really after the fact constructions by volunteer enthusiasts.  Some serials lend themselves well to this attempt.  Others do not. Besson is one of the troublesome ones. 

Reynolds was in business from 1893 to 1940, so it would seem the horn couldn't be any newer than that.

My guess was based on the HuC list. I was assuming that the numbers in that list were related to horns of known year of manufacture, but I understand the intrinsic unreliability of them.

My investigation into the T. Reynolds firm turned up a final liquidation date of 1983. They weren't always at the "43 Chapel St." address - the range I could document was 1903 to 1929 and they weren't at that address in 1895.

Since it's my photo, I guess I'll need to send it to you, which I'll do directly. Thanks very much Smiley
