Jean Vivien was based in Philadelphia until around 1892 as a valve maker and inventor. Charles Colemen bought him out and planned to move him to New York City to supervise valve manufacturing at the new Missenharter factory.
He supervised valve manufacturing at the Missenharter factory in early 1893. The valves he was made were described as telescoping valves. These valves appeared on cornets and valve trombones.
