Van Engelen was founded in 1813 and in the 19th century used the name Fabrique dInstruments de Musique Militaire. It was the biggest of five brass instrument factorys in the Belgian town Lier. De Vries was one of the other makers in Lier. Van Engelen made every part of the instruments themselve by hand and kept on doing so until they went bankrupt in the 1970s. A part of their factory inventory is in a museum called Het Vleeshuis in Belgium.
