Frederick Busch flourished in New York.
Busch was a low volume maker, known for making high quality instruments. His instruments show a similarity to Distin cornets of the same period.
1842 born in Markneukirchen, Germany
1870 Busch & Glaesel at 255 Bowery with violin maker August Glaesel (he is at 317 Bowery in 1872 and 373 Bowery in 1880s); note that 251-255 Bowery were the same building and both addresses show up at various times so probably mean the same location
1871- after 1902 Busch alone at 251 or 255 Bowery
1874 not listed in directory
1877 earliest city directory that give his home in NJ
1878-79 Henry Distin shares the 255 Bowery site
1880 NLI states that Busch was at 47 Lafayette Place this year only which is where Harvey & Allen Dodworth are located and called the "Churchman Building" or former Astor mansion. Also, a mark of Busch and Fischer is known.
1884 city directory gives his home at 115 Bloomfield, Hoboken 1893 NY factory report shows him at 251 Bowery, 4 male workers
1894 city directory gives his home at 156 2nd St., Hoboken 1896 Busch now listed with 3 male workers
1900 now listed with 4 male workers 1902 down to 2 men
1909 gone from factory inspection list (1903 to 1908 lists do not detail all names so it’s hard to know when he closed up)
1914 granted patent #1,095,188 for two-part mouthpiece; address is given as Hoboken, NJ
1917 Walter Lewis, foreman for Coleman factory, relates in the "Musical Messenger" (Vol.13) that "Fred Busch is still living, or was at last accounts, and makes a few instruments just to keep his hand in it. He is a pretty old man and of course does not attempt to compete with young and vigorous concerns."
1920 Frederick dies on April 8 in Hoboken
