After apprenticing himself to several other printers, he established his own business 1835, as a piano dealer and music printer, at 105 Washington St. Boston. During the 19 Century, Ditson bought up many the catalogs of 50 other music businesses.

By 1845 he was at 115 Washington, and John Haynes joined the company

1857, The name was Oliver Ditson and Co.

In 1860, spun off John Church in Cincinnati, and in 1864 he spun off Lyon and Healy in Chicago

Established by Oliver Ditson in Boston and became one of the largest American musical instrument dealers, and publishers. In 1861, they established a musical instrument branch as John C. Haynes and Co. , in 1866 they bought WC Peters, 1867 Firth Son & Co, in 1875 they bought Hall and Co. The company was renamed Oliver Ditson Company upon the death of Ditson in 1888.

1900 the Haynes branch was amalgamated with the Ditson Company

They used the trade names of Bay State, Everrite, New Century, Victory, and Yankee

Business ended in 1931.
