Amati

Graslitz

Czech Republic

1945-present

Amati was established in 1945 as a cooperative grouping Bohland & Fuchs and others from Graslitz and in 1948 incorporated firms such as from other locations such as Cerveny and Lidl.

Most of the German population in Bohemia were forcibly evicted from Czechoslovakia, allowing them to only take 110 lbs of luggage with them. The newly Slavic state ethnically cleansed itself of all Germans - most in the first 24 hours of the effort. The East German government set-up a generous relocation program, but many did then flee from the East German location, preferring to be refugees in the West.

The nature of the ethnic cleansing, as opposed to a simple economic or other change to the business environment, probably did affect Bohland & Fuchs more than other firms. They had been a supplier to Germanic military entities since the Franco-Prussian war, and Karl Fuchs ran a firm that incorporated being German into their identity to some extent. It was still a family business, and that entire family was basically arrested. The firm dissolved from the loss of all of its leadership and most of its labor leaving the facilities involuntarily abandoned.

Amati - Kraslice is the common way the company marked its name on things until the fairly recent Amati-Denak Ltd.

At the end of the cold war, Amati did begin satellite operations, probably subcontracting at least at first, in Markneukirchen. Marknuekirchen and Graslitz are geographically close - maybe a half hour drive. Julius Keilwerths brother Max was retained by Amati to consult on the integration of the cooperative. He remained at Amati until 1951. He would have had connections to all of the former German suppliers and to new firms run by his former workers, and could easily have subcontracted work there - particularly in East Germany.
