Firth, Hall & Pond were in business in New York from 1833 to 1847. and in Litchfield CT from 1839-1867. Prior to that Firth and Hall were in partnership (1822-1841) in New York. And, later as Firth Pond & Co in New York (1847-1863), and Firth, Son & Co (1863-7).

It unclear whether they were dealers or makers.

All brass instruments found are labeled "Firth, Hall & Pond New York" and date from 1833-1847. All are keyed bugles.

John Firth: 1798-1864

  • 1810 to US from England
  • 1812 served in war w/William Hall 1813 worked for Edward Riley in NYC
  • 1815 started his own shop at 8 Warren St. 1817-19 now at 9 Frankfurt St.
  • 1820 now at Hester St.

Thaddeus Firth: 1821-1913 son of John

Edward I. Firth: 1836-? son of John

William Hall: 1796-1874

  • 1812 served in war with John Firth 1813 worked for Edward Riley in NYC 1820 joined John Firth at 8 Warren St.

James F. Hall: 1823-? son of William

Sylvanus B. Pond: 1792-1871

  • 1825 established music store in Albany, NY 1833 moved to NYC to join Firth & Hall

William A. Pond: 1824-1885 son of Sylvanus

William A. Pond, Jr. : 1845-1884 son of William, Sr.

Firth & Hall:

  • 1821 established at 362 Pearl St.
  • 1832 moved to 1 Franklin Square

  • 1833-47 store at 1 Franklin Sq.

Firth, Pond & Co .:

  • 1847-55 store at 1 Franklin Sq. with sons Thaddeus & Wm 1856-62 now at 547 Broadway; S.P. retires in 1850

  • 1863 established at 563 Broadway with John, Thaddeus & Edward
  • 1867 sold business to Oliver Ditson

William Hall & Son:

  • 1847 established at 239 Broadway with James 1864 now at 543 Broadway
  • 1866 now listed as dissolved

William A. Pond & Co. :

  • 1863 established at 547 Broadway w/son
  • 1874 547 Broadway & 39 Union Square, inst. importer
  • 1878 move to 25 Union Square
  • 1879 25 Union Sq. & 25 E. 15th St.
  • 1881 selling Distin band instruments made by Boosey & Co. of London; sole US agents, 25 Union Sq.
  • 1888-90 25 Union Sq., estate of William Pond only
