Description Engraved on the bell U.I.G./179/2994/ Kaspar Wicky/ Geneve/the Couesnon logo/COUESNON/ET CIE./Paris/Monopole Conservatoire Tubaron: What makes this a french horn and not a mellophone? Looks like it is made for right hand on valves. Do french horns ever have piston valves? Pryorphone: First off, it is left handed. See the thumb ring visible inside the loop the lead pipe? The pinky goes in the hook, and the fingers go over the tubing to the valves. The right hand goes in the bell. Yes, there have been some horns built with piston valves. There have even been right handed horns built. The real teller is the length of the horn, and the length of the valve tubing. A mellophone is an octave ABOVE the horn, so that the valve tubing is much shorter, along with the total inside length of the horn. It does not matter what kind of valves you use, but you are right, USUALLY a mellophone ia piston valve and right handed; a horn, rotary, and left handed.
