gsmonks: That doubled-back section of brass looks very familiar . . . oh, wait! I have several of those! They are the Eb extensions that come with old mellophones! Except someone has lopped off a bit of the bottom arm.
OLDLOU: After reading your comment per the old cornet pictured, I just had to get out my grandfathers Wurlitzer Improved Symphony cornet, also engraved in the bell logo as being made in Cincinatti,Ohio. The valve block looks to be the same, or very nearly so. The connector tubes from the first to the second valve casing, and from the second to the third are parallel to the leadpipe on mine, whereas, on the pictured cornet these tubes run at a slant upward. In all other ways the valve blocks look to be identical.
As for the pictured horn being a "Frankenhorn", I doubt that. I think it to be authentic. What bothers me is the very shallow, tight crooks of the reverse "S" curve. I have several "S" curve cornets and all are more open in their curvature of the tubing.
Pryorphone: It was the upward slanting connecting tubes which first caught my eye. This seems very similar (but not quite the same) as early Conn Wonders. The not-quite parallel mouthpipe ending with an A shank receiver seemed to clinch it for me, though.
OLDLOU: Upon re examination, the reverse "S Curve" plumbing does look to be a replacement job. Having never seen a Wurlitzer Symphony cornet I have nothing to really compare this horn to. My "Improved Symphony" cornet is of the more common "Patern Anglaise" with the single continuous curve leadpipe, rather than the pictured reverse S Curve configuration. I can readily see that a common English Patern horn with a rotted out leadpipe could easily be converted to the S Curve design, rather than to try to bend a replacement single curve leadpipe. Your claim about using alto horn tuning slides and a straight mouthpipe does make sense. Perhaps the pictured horn is in fact a Frankenhorn done by someone with a good sense of how to make a decent repair.
