Description | Image used courtesy of Horncollector.com
This is the very first version of the Epoch No 1 Cornet, that had the 1st and 3rd valves of equal length. One can see that loosening the 1st valve bottom cap might be difficult in this configuration, which prompted Buescher to lengthen the first valve casing so that the bottom cap was BELOW the tubing. |

Description | Patent date 1901
Pryorphone: The No. 3 is the New Long Model Cornet, taken from matching the wraps and details to the horn. The 1901 patent is for the Epoch valve system. It only had unequal valve depths for the No. 1 Cornet. For all of the other horns they made and used it on (including other cornets) it had equal depth valves. You can tell that this horn has the Epoch valve system because the 2nd valve slide is high and faces forward. |

Not being an Epoch horn, I will assume that # 65 could have been made from 1894 on. The leather case that accompanies it certainly looks like the horn is in pretty original condition, and all of the cornets advertised in the Buescher Mfg Co materials have mouthpipe shanks, while all of the cornets advertised in my 1909 Buescher BIC True-Tone have fixed mouthpipes. I will agree that the valve tops and bottoms certainly resemble Buescher instruments of a slightly later period, and the ones on my cornet are of a much finer level of detail. Recently there was a BBIC Epoch No. 1 horn for sale on "that auction site" that clearly had a valve bottom substituted from a later horn, while the remaining one next to it was original.

Description | 2nd valve casing is stamped LP C 15
freundtptcor: I noticed on the collars of all three valve slides is stamped Bb and on the insert part of each of these slides is stamped the number 34. The top main tuning slide has stamped "A" on the collar nearest the waterkey, while closer to the lead pipe end is stamped Bb on what appears to be an extension to the main tuning slide.
Pryorphone: The "extension" stuck before the first slide (IF it can be removed) does look long enough to put a C cornet into Bb (it should be about the length of the first valve). And the brace from the 3rd slide looks like it was purposely put on after that part for a reason.
The problem is, unless you got the slightly shorter 1st, 2nd and 3rd valve slides (which would be marked "C" rather than "Bb"), I am not sure it even makes any sense to see if the "extension" can be removed; the open notes will be in C, but all the notes that you use any valves for will be slightly flat (too long).
"LP" means that the horn was built to modern A=440 pitch.
The "15" is the model number.
It IS a C/Bb/A cornet. The first tuning slide crook is marked goes with the Bb "H" section, but is marked "A" because, as you can see, there is a threaded rod attached to it which, when pulled out, put the cornet in A. But only the Bb section has the post through which it is threaded. My C/Bb/A Conns are very similar, so that when you take the Bb/A section out, it is replaced by a c crook which has no rod. This is so that you do not have to unscrew the nut off the end, and keep track of it until you put it back in Bb. But it IS the same size (the crook). If fact, if you follow the link and look at my silver Conn closely, you will see that the lowest slide has a stop rod on it (it was the Bb/A slide), while the postcard picture with it has the C slide in, without it.
The valve slides are a bit more complicated. Rather than just pull them out, like you do on my Conns, you replace them. I would think that there would have been another set marked "C", to go along with the tuning slide.
Bb to A is only a half step, so most often cornet players were just expected to lip the notes down that used any valve tubing. If you can get your cornet up to C, you may find that you can do something similar. You will have to try those notes, and see how far out they are. You may be able to tune up well enough. You can see that the connections only seem a little longer than they need to be, so I would say "try it". You may be fine. If not, it may just take a little modification of the 1st and 3rd slides to get it to play in C.
