Description Bastrompet: bought this instrument on the internet and it is a normal Bb trumpet except it is missing the third valve what I want to know is there another brand that build 2 valve Bb trumpets and why did they build them? It seems to me that making a normal Bb is cheaper for the factories and gives the buyer a complete instrument and if you do not want to use the third valve ? then that is your choice. Pryorphone: I believe that the drum & bugle corps used this configuration after the single piston valve + single rotary valve configuration for their instruments (now they use a full three valved instrument). MineralMan: The two-valve configuration will allow playing a normal scale in the native key of the instrument, at least in the second full octave of the horn. For drum and bugle work, that would be more than sufficient, I would think. Once you get past the first bugled fifth, you have access to all the notes in the major scale, using just the two valves. Normal bugle calls do not go below that fifth, anyhow. Still, it seems kinda silly to me, since the addition of the third valve would make the instrument fully chromatic. I ca not imagine that it would add that much cost, given the low price of student-level trumpets these days. Bastrompet: My thoughts exactly but I forgot to tell this instrument is already some thirty years old and there is almostly no wear on the valves atall so I gues it has hardly been played on. It is supposed to have come from the Royal Dutch Airforce Band if so they most probably only tryed it out to find out they did not want it. I hope it is quite a rare one because that is what I try to collect rare Dutch made brass instruments.
