In response to the top one, I'd say a blessing.  I have a E. K. Blessing Artist that is identical to that, except for the engraving.  Mine dates from the later 30's and is terribly flexible.  Lots of color when needed, nice bright sound on a big blow.  Very open despite being what today would be called a medium bore.
